A lot goes into choosing your business partner. It’s not as easy as choosing your friend you get along with or someone who thinks you have a good business idea. Whether you are looking for a short term partnership or a long term partnership, it is crucial that you take time to make this decision. A bad partnership can hurt your business tremendously. Below we will give you 5 good  qualities to look for in a business partner.

  • Reliability

This one should be a no-brainer, find a business partner you can rely on. Look for a partner who doesn’t carry a lot of personal baggage, if they do be sure they can manage their time and prioritize the business. This is crucial when starting a business, find someone who is willing to put the time in along with you because long hours will go into the Start Up of a business.

  •  Skills and Experience

Find someone who brings something to the table. A business partnership should be 50/50, or 100/100 if both parties are fully committed. You should both have something to offer. The more skills you and your partner bring to the table the easier it will be to get started. Take time to list strengths each party has, this will help determine who will take the lead on certain tasks.

  • Passion

Your partner should be just as passionate about your business as you are. For your business to succeed and thrive, you both need to work together and work hard. There is no point in partnering with someone who isn’t going to pull their weight. This can lead to a bigger mess later so beware.

  • Level Headed

When you’re working long hours with the same person, conflicts and disagreements are inevitable. You will not always see eye to eye. Working with someone who holds grudges or festers on things will not be good for your business. Be sure you can effectively communicate with each other and maintain respect when doing so.

  • Honest and Trustworthy

If there is lack of honesty or trust on either side of the partnership, you will run into problems. You and your business partner should have the same vision and plan to achieve business goals.  Would you trust this individual with your personal bank account? If not, think twice about this partnership. There is enough to manage when running a business, the LAST thing you should have to worry about is whether your business partner is not honest with you.

When choosing a partner, set your emotions aside. Not all the people you love will necessarily make a good partnership in business. A great business can be damaged by a bad partnership. A great business will never meet its full potential with a bad partnership. Don’t rush into making the wrong partnership decision. Take your time. Even if you choose the perfect partner, a “break up” can happen so be sure to have all of your business agreements in writing. Keep in mind that it takes time for good things to grow, be patient with yourself and your team in this process.
