As the seasons change and the weather starts to get colder, don’t make the mistake of neglecting your property. We’re here to give you a list of things you can do to be more prepared for colder weather to come. Doing these will save you some time and money next year when it starts to warm up.
Tips
❄️ Clean up your yard! Put your outdoor furniture away for the winter or cover them if possible. Weather takes its toll on these items. If you live in a climate where winter isn’t “winter”, try using products like this to extend the life of your items. Put your Grill away for the winter or invest in a nice waterproof cover for it.
❄️ Get your SNOW REMOVAL equipment ready! This may only include a snow shovel for the occasional storm, but pull it out and clean the dust so you have it ready. If you get a lot of snow, make sure your snow blower or plow is serviced and ready to go. Stock up on the snow/ice melt and warm up the hot cocoa! Fun Fact: Snow on your grass actually protects it, so leave it on there and save yourself some time in the process.
❄️ Take care of your lawn! You’ve worked hard all summer keeping it nice, thick and green. Keep that going by overseeding your lawn in October. As fall comes to an end, fertilize your lawn. Keeping the soil nourished will help bring it to life faster in the spring. Don’t forget to turn your sprinkler system off, those pesky systems cause enough trouble on their own. The last thing you need is to have frozen lines everywhere!
❄️ Don’t neglect your garden! Get rid of the finished, rotting plants, and the invasive weeds! If you have mulch in your garden, fall is a great time to replenish.
❄️ Check your trees! A dying tree isn’t always eye catching. Make sure that they are sturdy and stable. Check the trunk for cracks and peeling bark. If you have dead branches, trim your tree before it starts to spread. If you think that your tree is dying, have an arborist take a look and remove if necessary. Take care of it now before the wind blows it over onto your house!
❄️ Check your drainage! Make sure the water will flow away from the house. If you have a low spot around the house, fill it with some soil, rocks and even concrete in some areas. If you are concerned about drainage problems, calling in a pro may be the best. Sometimes a french drain is necessary which will prevent an even bigger headache later.
❄️ Clean your gutters! After the leaves have fallen off the trees, clean your gutters. When your gutters backup, they will start to overflow and water will drain down your house. If you have a lot of trees surrounding your home, check these multiple times throughout the year to ensure they are draining properly.
